Tomorrow, April 22, 2017, is Record Store Day and you don’t have to leave Rockville to visit one! Purple Narwhal Music & Manga offers vinyl, CDs, cassettes, t-shirts, videos, and Japanese animation (anime) & comics (manga) on Rockville Pike.
Will FitzHugh and his wife, Alice Goldberg-FitzHugh, opened the store last September at 822G Rockville Pike behind the Citibank, near the intersection of First Street.
Goldberg-FitzHugh grew up in Rockville and her husband grew up in Kensington. They live in Rockville now and founded this local, independent business closeby.
“I grew up going to area record stores like Yesterday & Today and Vinyl Ink which are no longer in business,” stated FitzHugh, “With the resurgence of vinyl records we decided the time was right to open a new store since there aren’t any dedicated record stores in Rockville right now. We combined our interest in music and Alice’s interest in Japanese animation and comics into one store.”
They have all genres of music from Rock and Pop to R&B and Hip Hop to Classical and Jazz to Heavy Metal and Punk. FitzHugh plays guitar and has been in a few local punk bands so you know the alternative section’s impressive.
They mostly deal in pre-owned merchandise but also stock select new items.
