Fire Closes Bombay Bistro and Adjacent Businesses UPDATED

UPDATE: Bombay Bistro reopened before the weekend and all is well.

Bombay Bistro, Savvy Treats, and Dri-Vin Cleaners & Launderers are closed today due to an early morning fire in the building on West Montgomery Avenue.

At approximately 7:30 AM, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson, Pete Piringer, reported that firefighters were investigating smoke in the building. The ceiling and roof were checked for what turned out to be an electrical issue between the cleaners and the restaurant. Unfortunately, firefighters needed to break through the door of the bakery during the effort to find and extinguish the fire.

In order to investigate the fire, a hole was also made in the roof, which is the primary reason the businesses would not be able to open. Gas and electric service was shut off to the building.

Midmorning, the co-owner of Bombay Bistro, Surfy Rahman, explained that they were having difficulty finding a company to make the repairs since it was a holiday week. He expressed concern if any storms bring rain without the roof intact. Bombay Bistro has been a community favorite for 25 years.

According to the fire inspector, the City of Rockville would ultimately be responsibly for deciding when they would be able to reopen.

When they are, these locally-owned, small businesses will certainly need to make up for lost business, so be sure to visit.
